Mayor Paulette Guajardo of Corpus Christi loves taking credit for things, so here is a list of awards we should officially nominate her for.
Her poor leadership and judgment over the last four years have put Corpus Christi on the decline. Now she wants us to re-elect her?
Take a look at these awards and her many accomplishments to help you decide if we want four more years.
Award for #1 Fastest Declining City in Texas
Under Paulette’s leadership, Corpus Christi is now the slowest-growing city in Texas. Between 2019 and 2022 our population shrank by 3.17%. With Paulette, Corpus Christi is estimated to experience little or no population and job growth over the next 25 years.
Award for Doubling Property Taxes
Paulette and others will say she lowered tax rates, but that did not do anything to lower property taxes. Appraisals are through the roof, and property taxes have doubled in the last four years under Paulette’s leadership. Paulette voted for property taxes raises EVERY SINGLE YEAR as Mayor.
Award for Ignoring Voters
In 2023, Corpus Christi voters overwhelmingly opposed Proposition A, a measure to allow the city to build and maintain a new hotel. Paulette wouldn’t accept the people’s decision. She is now seeking to subvert the voters’ will and move forward with the hotel project.
Award for False Government Document
Paulette’s new hotel project was submitted by the company to the City Council with a falsely edited FEMA document and approved by her. She does not respect the ethics codes of Texas and the City of Corpus Christi or the will of the people.
Award for Most Undeserved Raise
While the City was facing a $25,000 shortfall, Paulette rammed through a 10% increase in the City Manager’s salary (more than the 5% allowed). The City Manager now makes $409,000 annually and an extra 260 hours of paid time off. That is more than the Governor of Texas and the President of the United States.
At the same time, 2,000 city employees did not get a cost-of-living adjustment.
Award for Overpromising and Underdelivering
When Paulette became Mayor she said, “We’re so good at fixing all your streets that they’ll be fixed in 6 years.” Just the next year she changed her estimate for street improvements to 12 years. Not long ago, they told the city all your residential streets will be done next year. So, which is it? Paulette overpromises and underdelivers to the people of Corpus Christi.
Award for Water Shortage
Water shortages were a major problem when Paulette took office, but we’re still where we started four years later. Corpus Christi is at 70% max capacity for water, which is hurting our growth and preventing economic expansion. Desalination and other water resource efforts are simply not moving forward as they should be.
